Policy - protecting heritage

I am proud to acknowledge the great amount of activity that has occurred and the important work of protecting our heritage and environment

In terms of policy, the Heritage Tourism Strategy is an initiative built on the back of over 280 contributions from the tourism industry, heritage operators and custodians, local government, regional communities, Traditional Owners, and those with an interest in heritage tourism.

It is designed to help this State realise its heritage tourism opportunity and the significant potential to unlock South Australia’s heritage places and stories to create experiences that:

  • showcase SA’s distinctive history
  • enhance the unique appeal of our State
  • encourage visitors to stay longer, spend more and connect more deeply with destinations.

You can have your say on the Draft Strategy online here: https://www.environment.sa.gov.au/topics/heritage/heritage-tourism-strategy

In our community, we have seen strong investment:

✅ $5M+ for Carrick Hill Restoration and Visitor Centre

✅ $300K+ for Belair National Park including Old Government House

✅ $750,000 for Wittunga Botanic Garden

✅ $100,000 Brownhill Creek Recreation Park Wirraparinga Loop Trail

It has been a pleasure working with the local heritage and environmental groups in my electorate to secure funds.

I would encourage those eligible to apply for Round 3 of the South Australian Heritage Grants Program.

This round $250,000 is available for grants up to $20,000 for conservation works or documentation on State Heritage-listed buildings.

You may have also seen the #SAVETHEGATEHOUSE community led campaign to try and protect the 130-year-old heritage listed Waite Gatehouse and surrounding significant trees from being destroyed.

I would encourage you to continue the fight by signing the petition at my office or online and by sharing posts from the Save the Gatehouse Community Facebook page.
